Sophie’s Block – Chardonnay – 2015

Vintage Conditions

2015 was a mild growing season, dry Spring with temperatures slightly warmer than average.  Summer temperatures were average to below average, with no days of extreme heat, which is ideal for flavour development. We had a reduced need for irrigation which resulted in a very strong vintage for all varieties. Both white and red wines showed fantastic depth of flavour and finesse. One to watch!

Winemaking

The grapes were picked over two weekends to add depth and complexity to the wine. The first pick adds grapefruit and tight mineral structure to the wine while the riper second pick added weight and intensity. Both components complement the style. This wine was made using traditional Burgundian techniques. The grapes were destemmed and gently pressed. Wild fermentation occurred with the vineyard’s indigenous yeast in French oak barriques and hogsheads. The barrels used were 31% new and a mixture of older oak. Careful winemaking added subtle nuances whilst maintaining the tight structure and preserving the unique vineyard characters of the wine. There was no malolactic fermentation and limited barrel stirring.

Tasting Notes

This elegant Chardonnay has attractive dried herbs, cashew, some tight grapefruit, minerals and a fine integrated oak. The palate is lively and complex finishing with a fantastic length highlighting the pedigree of this wine.

Henry’s Block – Shiraz – 2014

Vintage Conditions

After a frost early in the season which saw some of our Chardonnay shoots get burned, the 2014 Vintage panned out quite well for both our white and red wines. Spring saw average weather conditions followed by a hot, dry spell during late summer. With careful canopy management of the vines and timely watering during a particularly hot period in late January, we kept the vines stress free and in excellent condition. The resulting grapes showed the intensity of flavor that this region is famous for.

Winemaking

The entire block was hand picked in one day and the wine shows the hallmarks of premium cool climate Shiraz. The grapes were gently crushed, allowing a large percentage of whole berries to remain unbroken. 10% whole bunches were also added to the fermenter. The wine was traditionally fermented using the vineyard’s indigenous yeast in open vats. It was gently hand plunged four times per day and it remained on skins for fourteen days. After pressing, the wine was matured for 20 months in French oak and hogsheads and barriques (31% New, 38% one year old and 31% older oak) before being prepared for bottling with minimal filtration.

Tasting Notes

This wine has classic cool climate pepper and spice, cherry whilst still showing some darker berry aromas. The palate has elegant red berries flavours, spice, richness and an integrated oak finish. The fine chalky tannins add structure to this elegant wine.
